I just learned the terrible news that Patriarch Alexy of Moscow has died. What a loss this is for the Russian Church. He lived through such a turbulent and historical period in Russia, and was a driving force behind the Church’s revival in Russia. Many outside Russia criticized his closeness with the post-communist government, but he has only tried to return the Church to its historical central role in the life of the country.
God’s paths and purposes sometimes seem so clear. Who wants to take a bet that Bishop Hilarion of Vienna, a dark horse favorite for election as the OCA’s metropolitan, will be the next Patriarch of Russia? Bishop Hilarion’s withdrawal of his name from contention because he was committed to the Russian Church certainly opens him up as the logical candidate. There is no doubt about his ability and godly character to lead the Church.
Memory eternal Lord for your servant, Alexy, and guide and protect your Holy Church.
